Our Story
It all started in a small workshop in Ohio when husband and wife team Gary and Sue Nelson began designing and handcrafting leather purses as a hobby and side business. As demand grew from local boutiques for their quality leatherwork, Gary and Sue realized they were onto something special.
In 1987, they officially launched Great American Leatherworks®, focusing on using only the finest American leathers to create timeless, fashionable designs built to last. We’ve come a long way since our humble beginnings, but remain committed to handcrafting our leather purses, handbags, and accessories to the highest standards for our customers.
Made in America
We take great pride in being Made in America – our workshop is still located in Ohio where our skilled leather artisans meticulously handcraft each item. We use only the best leathers sourced from tanneries right here in the USA.
From satchels to hobos, crossbodies to totes, our American leathers include full grain cowhides, butter soft lambskin, and premium suede. Leather types range from pebbled to smooth finishes in classic to modern colors. We are committed to responsible environmental practices and many of our leathers are eco-friendly.

We stand behind the quality and durability of our leather purses and bags by offering a limited lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. If you aren’t completely satisfied, returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase. We also provide complimentary repairs for the life of your bag.
